Research Interests

Ryan’s work focuses on using computer simulations to model earthquakes in a variety of natural situations. He also works with a code that models granular materials, specifically the fine-grain ground rocks located at the center of faults. His most recent project focuses on the types of vibrations in the Earth that may cause an earthquake to occur. Such triggering has been observed in nature from both natural and man-made sources, but is still not completely understood. Ryan's simulations attempt to determine what type of weakening occurs at the core of a fault that eventually leads to an earthquake. In addition to this research, Ryan has strong interests in science policy, science communication and education.
